Your go to hunting stuff.

What are the things you can't live without while hunting.  There has been some great improvements in the last 10 years.

1. For me it's good binos.
Never had them 10 years ago and I was missing out
2. A good range finder.  Man I've become a deadly archer with a range finder.  No more guessing plus it doubles your range
3. A Havilon knife.  If your still sharping knives your behind the game.  Change the blade and you have a sharp knife.
4. A GPS with MT tracks in it.  After Big J and Enslow left I got one.  It's amazing on all the public out there.  This is the single greatest thing in antelope hunting EVER.
5. A digital camera.  I had a film camera when I arrowed my ram and the film cost me $70 to develope and I only got 15-20 good photos.

Dead animals don't need fur anyway!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with Hunttomuch on all. I do not have the Gps trax though.
I will add:
Windstopper/ Windshear wool sweater
Bino buddy harness
Good socks and boots.

Bad decisions make great stories!

While hunting, I like to remember a weapon as well.

Me too, I had a cheap pair of Simmons for years and you couldn't see more than a couple hundred yards.
2. A good range finder.  Man I've become a deadly archer with a range finder.  No more guessing plus it doubles your range
That's on my list.
3. A Havilon knife.  If your still sharping knives your behind the game.  Change the blade and you have a sharp knife.
I guess I'll have to try one out. They look a little too.........idk small maybe, or flimsy, that's why I've never wanted one.

I just started using a digi a couple years ago! I have hundreds of hunting and fishing pics at home in boxes that'll never get looked at again most likely.

1. I'm going to say GOOD TIRES for my pickup. I've always ran the stock tires, or some "Nancy-boy" tires but after having an aggressive tread I'll never go back.

2. A Bi-pod on my rifle. (even though I don't use it much)

3. A "day-pack". I do NOT miss the old days where I'd throw a couple cans of Mountain Dew in my pockets, some candy bars, etc, before going on a long trek. Now I just get out of the truck, put it on, and start walking. butt-wipe? check. water? check. extra beanie and gloves? check. extra shells? check. etc, etc.

4. My Stormy Kromer.

Throw #'s 1 and 2 into the same rig and you'll be happier.

Nab a GOOD knife in S30V, you'll deep 6 the Havalon

GPS/Trax is a must.  Don't really like my handheld, may have to address that before next season.

I carry a P&S when I'm solo, when I buddy-up however and can spread the load a bit I'll happily tote a good DSLR with top-flite glass.

For big-game hunting my rifle/ammo HAS TO BE 100% reliable and without doubt.  I'll pull the firing pin and cycle every round of ammo I'm bringing along to ensure proper F/F.  If the combo won't run the bullet into a kill-zone sized splotch on steel on the 1st shot from a cold bore out to say 600yds, the combo doesn't make the grade or the trip.  Add that the combo's gotta run TSX's.  The TSX is a gift from the Grim Reaper himself.

Eberlestock Dragonfly

Merino wool

A Windstopper wool sweater

Temp/Terrain appropriate boots, appropriately broken in.

Temp appropriate clothing that dries fast.  Holy crap have long strides been made here.

If I can be somewhere with outlets in the evening, PEETS portable boot dryers.

Ibuprofen and Gold Bond

There are only 10 kinds of people in the world, those who understand binary, and those who do not.

Progressing as a hunter I have switched up lots of stuff.
Whitey to Mule deer.
Drag to quarter out.
Off hand running shots to shooting sticks.

So my gear has also improved or changed.
Went from Swift scope to Leupold vx 2 or 3 on my rifles.
Now use a back pack and shooting sticks.
Good socks, used to wear regular cotton socks now use good liner and wool socks.
Bino harness and a lighter/better pair of binos (vortex).

Good topic H2M. I kinda like the idea of those knives.
As for GPS / map stuff, its what I do for a living so I already know how important it is.

I do need to upgrade or improve clothing and outer wear.

Phil

Good packs, I never hunt without. Never know where I may end up, this way I always have everything I need. I have seperate packs for rifle and archery. They also have knives, rope, flashlights, food and everything else I may need. No switching gear from one to the other.
Good clothing. Like my Sitka stuff and still use it, but the Kuiu is lighter and I think better for on the move style hunting.
Shooting sticks or bipod. Wish I would've realized the importance as a kid hunting 4C, I would have killed some very big whiteys and muleys. Now I never shoot off hand.
I have the Leupold 1000 TBR. I know its not the best, but for me I'm using it to see if I am 300-400 yards. If an animal is farther, I'm getting closer.
Water bladders for packs. Back when I was a kid, I'd hunt the badlands all day and maybe drink a Mountain Dew.
Gonna use the Heater Body Suit tonite. Need to learn and trust when it's below 30 and I'm sitting on stand, it's well worth the effort to pack it in.

The kill is the satisfying, indeed essential, conclusion to a successful hunt. But, I take no pleasure in the act itself. One does not hunt in order to kill, but kills in order to have hunted. Then why do I hunt? I hunt for the same reason my well-fed cat hunts...because I must, because it is in the blood, because I am the decendent of a thousand generations of hunters. I hunt because I am a hunter.- Finn Aagard
