Photo Description:
I knew I had a horseshoe when I shot this guy. The sound of crunching and tearing impala carcasses alerted us to his arrival. A botched attempt to light the bait with the flashlight sent the Hyena fleeing from the commotion before a shot could be made. As we argued and hissed from our vantage point high on the cliff, the PH fired the torch in the direction of the bait to show the tracker where he should have aimed the light. As they quietly argued suddenly through the scope I could see two globes glowing at the outer perimeter of the lights path. I quickly directed him to move the light north and I could see the creature well enough to take the shot. Terry (my PH) confirmed it was a Hyena. The sound of the shot ripped through the night air and the muzzle flash quickly robbed our night vision. After recovering from the shot I quickly found the shape in my scope and directed the light upon it. The beast lay unmoving for over a minute and I knew my aim was true. Upon retreiving him another Hyena came in within 70 yards and paralleled us for a couple minutes, easily within range of my rifle. It was hard not to pull the trigger on another hyena but the brute that lay at our feet was enough to satisfy my desire. It was a great trophy and a super hunt. Definately one for the memory book.
