Big Stone Lake - Tuesday, June 1, 2010
Report Details
The "catching" on Big Stone Lake has definitely improved overthe past few days. With more anglers getting out on the lake
for the 3-day weekend we were able to get more reports
on the fishing activity and many were pleased with their catches.
There were several limits brought in with many of them having
a nice walleye over the 20 inch mark. We saw a 27 inch,
and two 25 inch walleye at our camp alone with reports from
other anglers of some very nice fish being caught. Many of
these larger walleyes the anglers are opting to release and
keeping the smaller 12-13 or 14-15 inch walleye of which there is an
abundant supply this year.
The water remains very, very clear so the most successful anglers were
working the weedlines that have started on the south end of the lake
and around the islands. Pulling spinner/crawlers on planer boards or
pulling crankbaits seemed to be the most favorite method. Mud lines
started to appear with the wind on Saturday and Sunday and anglers
worked these with crankbaits and were able to net some
walleye. However, shoreline fishermen and the those working the rock
piles with slip bobbers and leeches did well too. Slip bobbers worked
well when the water was calm and one could anchor up and wait for the fish to
arrive.
We are still seeing some bullhead, northern, largemouth and white bass
being caught as well. But most anglers are still targeting the walleye.
June is here and the prime walleye fishing is just ahead. The water
surface temperature is running about 70 degrees and the carp are
spawning along the shore lines...all signs that setting the hook is going
to get easier the next few weeks.
