Big Stone Lake - Sunday, July 4, 2010
Report Details
The end of June was still a very good fishing time formany anglers. Many of the areas that were popular
the beginning of June (Skeleton Island, Kight Island and
the Ortonville Pennisula) had become so weed choked that
anglers and to seek other areas of the lake to find fishable
water.
And they did! Pulling bottom bouncer/spinner/crawler
harnesses along the SD shoreline from Manhattan Reef
northwest to Schmidts Landing there were several limits
of nice walleye brought in.
Our guide boat pulled crankbaits the beginning of the week on
the sand flat from the MN state park northwest to just past
Lou's Point and was able to get his guests on some very nice
perch! Yes, perch on shad raps! Several of anglers followed the
same method and were able to easily get 10-12 very nice perch
in the 10 to 12 inch range. Very unusual for this time of year,
but a nice surprise.
As July 1st rolled around and the temperatures started to climb
we saw a definite decline in the number of walleyes coming in.
The white bass are still abundant and those perch are still coming
in as well.
Setting the hook in the dog days of summer is always a challenge on
Big Stone Lake, but being willing to try new things and new areas may
continue to be the ticket to netting those limits.
