Big Stone Lake - Sunday, July 25, 2010

Report Details
The area has dodged a lot of the severe weather this
past week allowing many to get out and enjoy the lake.
This means more anglers seeking out the walleye, perch,
white bass, largemouth bass and northern.

The best bite has been the perch! Yes, perch. We have
had several reports of anglers pulling crankbaits, anchoring
and slip bobbering, even using some traditional ice fishing
(vertical jig over the side of the boat) techniques to get these
dandy perch. There is a good size
reported as well with many in the 10 inch plus range.
A surprising development for Big Stone Lake as we normally
do not see these species bite aggressively until late August
or early September...but we will take them!

Areas that seem to be kicking out more fish than others are
the 10-11 foot flat from the Big Stone State Park to Lou't Point,
the Goose Isle area and Manhattan Reef. Did have a boat get
some perch in the Mallard Point area as well. There has been
a few reported biting off the docks as too! A nice surprise for
those that can not get out in a boat.

Now, you walleye anglers....there are a few still setting the hook
on these as well, but not as abundant as the perch and they seem a bit more of
a challenge. We still get reports of an occasional walleye while
trolling bottom bouncer/spinners and crawlers, but a definite slow down
from our May/June bite.

The white bass are active as well. If you get into a school of them,
there is a miniature battle going on to get them in the boat. A lot of fun
for any angler and decent table fare when cleaned and prepared properly.
