Report Details
Perch, perch and more perch! The past weekend wasan excellent fishing weekend for anglers. Many, many
fishermen coming in for supplies shared their stories
of some very nice catches of perch and the techniques
they used to get them.
The techniques varied as much as the anglers. Most are
still pulling crankbaits or bottom bouncer/spinner/crawler
combinations, some are started anchoring on the traditional
perch spots and vertical jigging or using a slip bobber and there
are even some fishing strictly off the docks!
The trollers are finding the fish on the bottom, mostly in the
10-11 foot range and have even added sections of lead core
to their lure to get on the bottom. Yep, leadcore for perch!
The anchored fishermen have been using pieces of nightcrawer,
spikes or wax worms.
The favorite location remains in the Grapevine area and south to
Manhattan Island, but we are hearing of perch being caught in
the Windmill Reef area, Bay View Christmas trees and even off
people's docks. Saturday morning was the best time to be on the
lake, by afternoon the bite had slowed. The dock fishermen are
finding their best bite to be an hour before and up to sunset.
We are also seeing a few blue gill and some smaller walleye.
A stray catfish or two as well! With cooler night time temperatures
coming this fall, the walleye bite should improve.
If you have not made plans to get to Big Stone Lake yet...we
urge you to do so soon or you may just miss an opportunity to set
the hook on some quality 11 inch average perch.
